Taxiway

When flying over an airport, you can see all the straights and curves used in a taxiway to help a plane navigate on the ground. Inspired, I created a font that used the straights and curves. I got to my sketchbook and started playing around with this idea.

When I laid everything out in Figma, I was faced with two challenges. First, I wanted the font to be monospace to reflect how calculated taxiways are. But because of that, I needed to figure out how each letter would look monospaced. Because I used no diagonals in the font, I was faced with a second dilemma: stroke width. Especially with the U and the V. How can one create a V without diagonals without it looking like a U? With these challenges and the quick turnaround, I created a display font whose design replicates a taxiway after numerous sketches and critiques.
